4th Ukrainian Army Front Group 4th (4thUA)
was a strategic unit of Soviet Troops in the
South-West during World War II in 1943. It was created on October
20th, 1943 (as a result of South Army front group renaming).
It consisted of: 21111 and 3rd divisions,
5th offensive division,
28th, 44th, and 51st common divisions and 8th Air
force division.
Later on, the following divisions were
part of the 4thUA:
Primorsky Army and 4th Air Force Army.
In the September - beginning of November of
1943, 4thUA carried out Melitopol Operation of 1943. During the
operation, the troops moved 300km to reach river of Dnepr and Perokpskiy
Peresheek. This action facilitated to liberate Krym and South of
Right-Coast Ukraine. In January - February, 1944, during strategic
attack in Right-Coast Ukraine, the right wing of 4thUA took part
in Nikoposko-Krivorozhskaya operation. With the help of 3rd Ukrainian
Army front group, the troops liquidated
Nikopol enemy base on Dnepr.
In April-May, 1944, 4thUA troops and Primorsky Army devision, with
the help of Chemomorsky Navy and Azovskaya Military Navy carried
out Krym Operation. The result of the operation was destroying of
200,000 enemy troops and liberation of Krym.
On May 16, 1944, 4thUA was deprecated by the decision of Main Military
Headquarters.
Its commanders together with all technical support were transferred
to be kept as a reserve in Main Military Headquarters. 4thUA
was restored on August 6, 1944 as a part of 1st Division, 18th common
troops division, and 8th Air Force division. Later on, the following
divisions became part of it: 38th and
60th Armies. In September-October, 1944,
4thUA troops with the help of 1st Ukrainian Army front group carried
out Eastern- Karpaty Operation of 1944. The Soviet Troops moved
through Eastern Karpaty to liberate Zakarpatskaya Ukraine and part
of Czechoslovakia. One of the main operation goals was to help people
of Slovakia who stood out against German-fascists occupants (refer
to Slovak National rebellion of 1944).
In January-February of 1945, 4thUA with the help of 2nd Ukrainian
Army front group carried out Western-Karpaty Operation of 1945 during
which they liberated South of
Poland and significant part of Czechoslovakia. By destroying the
enemy South of Krakow, 4thUA helped soviet troops that were moving
from the South towards Warsaw-Berlin direction. In
Spring ofl945, as a result of Moravsko-Ostravskoy operation 4thUA
liberated Moravska-Ostravskiy industrial district from German-fascists
and prepared assistance for moving towards central part of Czechoslovakia.
On May 6-11, 4thUA took
part in Prague operation of 1945. The outcome of the operation was
destroying German Army as well as liberating Czechoslovakian territory
and its capital, Prague. In June 1945
4thUA was deprecated. Its administration was used to form Prikarpaty
Military Organization.
